reality bites April 25, 2008 WWE games are certainly getting better as the years go by, which is more than I can say for the story lines of the shows. SD vs. Raw '08 is very life-like. The intro's are spot on, the detail in the characters is impressive and the game play itself is very realistic (for a fake sport). I enjoy this version more so than the '07 game.
Layeth the smacketh down I say April 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have heard the bad reviews and most of them can't even spell F-U-N or W-R-E-S-T-L-I-N-G G-A-M-E. This game is awesome for WRESTLING FANS who actually like the sport and pay for the ppv and watch it every Monday. Or for people who have played others before. Anybody should enjoy this game so give it a chance. The new modes offer variations that are long but repetitive but I overlook that because I feel like a wrestler. I can create my own entrance and character, belt, stable, all in hitch. Buy this game it's awesome.
I really wish it would have been more February 6, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If I have a pet hate in the Xbox world, it is games, especially annual releases, that are rushed and do not maximise the full capabilities of the Xbox 360.
This falls into that category and sadly, is no real improvement on the series as a whole. The WWE games need some competition from somewhere to maybe force them to buck their ideas up a little.
I will say that the graphics, though flawed a tad, are very good and the feature to include your own music into the wrestler's introductions was a welcoming one too. The highlight of my game was seeing my guy enter the ring to the tune of "Snake Bit" (Jake the Snake Roberts). There are many match types, though the omission of a Survivor Series type, as well as tutorials and a decent manual, is disappointing. I have not been a real fan of WWE since I was around 13-14 (I am now 25) so am not familiar with many of the gametypes.
The control system is hard to get to grips with and it seems that a very brief manual, it is almost as if they want you to buy the guide, forgetting you splashed out $60 on the game already. I just want to know the fundamentals, and then try and beat the game alone.
"Create a Wrestler" is okay, but the annoyance of being unable to form a stable with a friends wrestler is stupid. This is the beginning of the problems for the game.
Firstly, whoever decided that making the game Xbox Live compatible (good idea) should have considered making the game co-op, with tag team competitions etc. We were looking forward to the prospect of teaming up with our guys and taking on others but unfortunately, we couldn't do it.
Secondly, the career mode is poor. Too too linear (it was better on the PS2 with the older games when you could play it like a proper RPG and talk to who you wish) and the storylines string together with little explanation or logic. The mini games and little "activities" you can do to boost your wrestler are unimaginative too. Plus it is frustrating to have to wrestle through injury. I wonder if this was playtested because they do restrict the flow and the enjoyment of the game.
To give value for money, perhaps the creators of the game could release DLC or bonus disks with new wrestlers on too. I am sure any fan would pay $20 for a "Legends disc" with 10 or wrestlers on or some extras to the roster. Even new career storylines perhaps?
The 360 has a huge memory and storage capability. I am sure it could sustain a more veritable career mode, not on the scale of a full RPG but with more elements of interaction and creativity involved. They could also freshen it up with some newer graphics, videos, commentary and other things as many have been recycled from the '07 version.
There is so much potential within this franchise but sadly, it looks as if the creators are going through the motions.
Graphics - 8/10 Not bad and the effects, intros and such look good Sound - 7/10 No complaints here though the crowd are quiet and the commentary tedious. Playability - 4/10 Awkward controls and after you've played through the same storylines 25 times, you may get a bit frustrated Lastability - 5/10 Not bad with a bunch of mates but the limited online play and repetitive single player mode will hinder somewhat. Overall -4/5 out of 10
Good Improvement over last year January 26, 2008 The 2008 edition has obvious improvements over 2007, but still leaves plenty of areas to improve in 2009. Overall, if you enjoyed playing 2007 and spent more than 15 hours playing it, you'll like 2008. Some of the changes in the default control setup took some time to get used to, but once you master that, you'll be having fun in no time. A favorite part of this game is the Hall of Fame game mode, where you relive great matches from the past. My only request is that next year's edition have the same game mode with more matches, like the elimination chamber matches.
For some reason more complicated than Madden January 2, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I guess the idea is to have a lot of depth for people who want to devote a LOT of time to learning the controls. I play most sports titles without a problem and I found the controls for this game to be too specialized and more complicated every year. The graphics look decent though.
