Pacific City is overridden; crime controls the streets. Three powerful gangs have taken the once-great metropolis hostage, and the police have proven powerless in their efforts to regain control. Only the Agency's deploying genetically enhanced agents of justice can provide citizens with some sense of hope. With an open-ended "sandbox" environment, players are free to explore the city and decide on the best tactics for each breathtaking scenario. Brace yourself. Justice is coming to Pacific City.

A next-gen visual and gameplay style
Crackdown pushes the action-driving hybrid genre into the next generation with the first ever truly 3-D playground. Gamers will level up their Agent's strength, agility, firearms, explosives, and driving skills while scaling the fully vertical world. Enforce justice by any means necessary in Pacific City, a crime-ridden urban center primed to explode and ready for you to explore. Enter an interactive world where anything can be used as a weapon as you clean up the streets the only way you know how. Your way. Developed by Scotland's Real Time Worlds exclusively for Microsoft Game Studios and the Xbox 360 console, Crackdown is the brainchild of Dave Jones, the creative genius behind many innovative game titles such as Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings.

Harnessing the amazing power of Xbox 360, Crackdown players enforce justice against the backdrop of a crime-ridden metropolis that is massive in scale and meticulous in detail. The game's unique presentation employs a highly stylized rendering technique that turns it into a living, breathing graphical novel. You play the role of an enforcer for the city's "Agency," a law enforcement entity looking to take back neighborhoods and lives from three large crime syndicates. You are part of the new generation of crime fighters- an entirely new breed of genetically superior super-cops, designed to use the enemies' tactics against them.

Multiplayer mayhem
From the initial conception, Crackdown has been built to feature a dynamic and engaging co-op experience for double the action, carnage, and intensity. Never before has a game allowed two players to simultaneously explore and interact with an open-ended game environment. Will you work together to find new ways of detonating your impressive stash of explosives? Or will you race each other to the next batch of collectible ability orbs? The choice is always yours!

An impressive number of weapons and objects are also at your disposal. Low on ammo? Never a problem. Thanks to an amazing amount of props and a deep physics system, you can use whatever you get your hands on as a weapon: Trash cans, vehicles, even people. Set the scene for mass destruction with a game that remembers your actions better than you do. Gather vehicles to assemble barricades, build epic piles of explosives, push it to the limit. Crackdown can take it.

A sandbox full of opportunities
For the first time ever, every inch of an urban playground has been designed for you to explore and exploit. Use any route necessary as you take down the crime syndicates, going under, around, or through the environment however you choose. While previous "sandbox"-style titles have allowed you to merely walk or drive around the environment, Crackdown encourages players to find new routes to and from destinations. Often times, scaling a building or traveling beneath the surface will present new and unexpected challenges to the player- or provide an even more deadly option for the enemy.

Get the job done, no matter what it takes. Any strategy or tactic is acceptable, so long as you re-claim the streets. Unleash the awesome powers of your agent, developing his full genetic potential, becoming faster and stronger, learning bone-crushing moves, using outrageous weapons, and defying certain death at every turn.

3 out of 5 stars It's just fine,.... but so much missed potential...   March 23, 2008
Crackdown IS a fun open-world sandbox game that is truely open. Unlike GTA or all it's clones,.. there are NO missions or cinema to unfold a linear story full of frustrating missions. You are a supercop unleashed on a HUGE city to take down and destroy a huge crime syndicate of gangs however you want to. Guns,.. throwing objects (even cars) acting like a superhero,.. you can do it all. You can level up your abilities and vehicles,.. and have fun just running/jumping all through the city getting orbs(that upgrade abilities) kind of like the hidden packages in GTA or even the coins in a Mario game.

It has recieved plenty of deserved praise. I agree with most of it.

BUT there is a downside. And the downside is that it has so much missing gameplay that could've made it a "GTA-killer" as opposed to just a nice distraction untill the next big game comes out.

First of all, the police officer aspect is very under developed. ALL you do is shoot and blow up gang members that shoot at you. There is no other crime except for gangs shooting at YOU and YOU alone. You're not protecting the citizens from anything. It would've been great if it had more police duty. Muggings,.. armed robbery,...giving tickets to speeders,.. stings and busts. Actually arresting people sometimes. Hunting criminals with outstanding warrants. Responding to dispatch calls.. All optional of course,.... something else to do besides the constant nonstop shooting of gangsters.

Now the other gripe I have with Crackdown: Lock-on aiming. This makes the MAIN aspect of the gameplay boring. Just lock on and hold down the fire key and that's it. Without the cheap lock on ,... the bullet accuracy is worthless. We don't need lock on aiming anymore. Just play Saints Row, Mercenaries, or GTA San Andreas to see how open-world 3rd person games can have the same superior aiming controls as opposed to lock on.
Also,.. the hand to hand combat is nothing more that a single kick. While you can pick up everything and throw it,.. it's useless and inneffective. You can't even do melee attacks with anything you pick up like in HULK: Ultimate Destruction. Even running over the gang members with vehicles is inneffective since they dodge your car 98% of the time. After trying all this,.. you'll end up just shooting everybody with the lock on aiming all the time and get bored.
After you defeat the gangboss in each island of the city,.. that island becomes devoid of any gang members,.. and since there is NO OTHER crime it just turns into a big boring city.

So for the first week you'll love it,.. but once you notice all the limits of gameplay you'll become bored. (it depends though,.. you may not care and just like it for what it is. It just depends on how much you crave a true living--open world with lots of gameplay variety.)

If only the developers had looked at the best features of other open world games like "Mercenaries", "Hulk: Ultimate Destruction", and even "True Crime LA" (for the police duty) and put them all together would Crackdown be all that it could be.

I would say that Saints Row and Mercenaries are both superior to Crackdown.

5 out of 5 stars very crazy   March 22, 2008
It is an extremely high paced game and when u first play it its going to seem like ur always shooting at somebody. But you get used to it and eventually it gets disguistingly fun.

4 out of 5 stars Was worth it at $60   March 21, 2008
This game was alot of fun when it was $60 and now it is $30. It is a free roaming, go any where, destruct-o match. It was one of the more fun I had completing a game. Unfortunately, online play is miserably slow and once you have leveled all the way up, the game quickly dulls.

For $30, this game is a must buy for any XBox 360 owner.

4 out of 5 stars Its a fun cheap game for blowing stuff up   March 14, 2008
this game does not have an amazing story its about jumping around on buildings and blowing things and people up. A fun little playground romp

4 out of 5 stars Fun with firearms   March 11, 2008
Crackdown is a delightful diversion. While it doesn't take more than a few hours to complete, those few hours are packed with plenty of fun and firepower.

Using sandbox gameplay as a base, Crackdown's recipe pits you as an "Agent" fighting crime in the gang-overrun Pacific City. Your superhero-esque powers allow you to run and jump through town, climbing buildings and pounding bad guys. The weapons you acquire range from puny pistols to rockin' rocket launchers. My personal favourite was the Firefly, whose five-round "clip" of seeking missiles allows you to make quick work of massive quantities of gang members.

We're all familiar with open-world design by now, but Crackdown puts a few spins on the concept to keep it fresh. First, cell-shading makes the characters and objects look like comic books come to life. Second, your character's skills advance through use. For example, when you defeat gang members by brute force your strength improves while shooting them augments your skills with a firearm. Even your driving skills are enhanced, resulting in better handling and performance. You can also gain skill points through activities like road & rooftop foot races and collecting orbs hidden throughout the city. One other nice touch is that as you take out gang leaders, there will be a noticeable decline in their strength and presence. Even the achievements are amusing- my personal favs were Body & Car Juggler (keep a body/car suspended in the air using explosives) as well as Body Armour (attach 5 gang members to a car using the harpoon gun), which is available via downloadable content.

While the innovations used in the game give it a little bit of spice, they certainly aren't mind-blowing. The game also has a few minor flaws, but nothing that seriously impedes your gang busting rampages. The only major drawback I noticed was that the game felt a little short. Overall I would definitely recommend PLAYING the game, although renting may be better than buying.
