Arguably the most talked-about television show of the 2006-2007 season, the Emmy-nominated fantasy Heroes gives viewers blends comic book-style adventure with plotting and characters as rich and layered as any graphic novel or drama series. Creator Tim Kring's premise is deceptively simple - ordinary individuals in locations around the globe discover that they have, for lack of a better term, super powers, and wrestle with this reality while facing challenges both global (the destruction of New York City, for one) and personal (indestructible cheerleader Hayden Panetierre has family issues - serious ones, as the true identity of her adoptive father reveals; Milo Ventimiglia's Peter Petrelli, who absorbs other powers, must overcome his own insecurities). Add to this mix a terrific villain - Zachary Quinto's Sylar, who hunts and kills people with extraordinary powers like our heroes - and viewers have a riveting series that exhibits an almost-perfect balance of cliffhanger thrills (the action and special effects are truly impressive for a network program) and genuine drama that sets the show apart from most speculative fiction (save, perhaps, the revived Battlestar Galactica, which it compares too favorably). The seven-disc set of Heroes: Season One offers a wealth of extras for fans, who may be familiar with some of them through the NBC.com website, especially the cast commentaries, which are featured on half of the episodes. Kring is featured on the 73-minute uncut pilot episode, which for some viewers, may be even better than the network version; the main difference is the degree of character development, including an entire storyline for D.L. Hawkins that isn't featured in the broadcast version. Also on deck are some 50 deleted scenes from the episodes, several by-the-books making-of featurettes, including coverage of the special effects and stunt work, and a profile of artist Tim Sale, whose illustrations are used for Isaac Mendez's prophetic artwork. Prospective buyers should note that while all of these supplemental features are included on the HD-DVD version of this set, the special Web-connectivity elements are not available here. -- Paul Gaita

Well...it's a pitty the HD-DVD format is dead but I strongly recommend this HD box. The episodes are awsome for anybody who's into sci-fi.

I am looking forward to season 2 in blueray.

5 out of 5 stars HEROES Seasons One and Two Coming to BLU RAY in August! Buy the   April 19, 2008

Just a reminder to those who are not aware: HEROES is coming to Blu Ray in August, so it doesn't make any sense to buy HD-DVD anymore, now that HD-DVD is officially DEAD. I can't wait to buy all the Seasons on Blu Ray!

I own Lost (season 3) on bluray and also did buy Heroes on HD DVD, as you know both formats are the new gen one, but let me tell you a secret, the quality of image in heroes goes beyond lost, it's great, i don't know why but to my eye it was a great experience. The extra material is good and the sound like me a lot of too. You are going to be very happy since the first chapter if you buy it, no doubt. It is paid by itself in the very moment you see Claire in HD ;)

3 out of 5 stars good video quality, but not great   March 26, 2008
I'd like to say first that this is without a doubt the best presentation of Heroes season 1 available. The video quality of these discs is far superior to the NBC broadcasts, but still leaves something to be desired.

The disc come packaged in a handsome box set, smartly packaged on their boards instead of being stacked. The visual quality of each episode seems to vary greatly. As is often the case with material shot on high def, lighter scenes tend to look great, while very dark scenes are plagued by grain and other video noise. Make no mistake, these episodes all look great. Colors are vivid, contrast is sharp, and there are few instances of compression artifacting (commonplace when dealing with highly compressed digital video).

This set also boasts some nice special features. The commentary tracks often include several cast members along with the standard writer director combination. This seems to keep the commentaries from ever growing stale or too technical, as the cast brings more a lay persons reading to the tracks. The other bonuses, e.g. which superhero are you, are okay, but nothing special. When HDDVD was still a valid format, one of the few advantages it had over BLU-ray was it's support of web-enabled content as well as support for multiple video streams. Take a look at the fast and the furious HDDVD special features; you can customize a car with your remote, apply the changes to a specific scene, and watch your car cruise around seamlessly integrated into the movie. That was amazing. On these discs the potential of the HDDVD's bonus content capabilities are largely overlooked. Specifically the online content is really nothing more than a slow webpage.

For me these discs weren't great, merely "good enough". These are clearly a step up in terms of visual quality from the HD broadcasts, but they don't really wow me the way other HDDVD releases did. To reiterate good, but not great. Worth buying if you are a heroes fan and don't want to wait for the blu-ray releases.

4 out of 5 stars very nice   February 13, 2008
This is a compelling first season of a so far great TV series. The HD image quality is a mixed bag. The problem is not the film grain which is normal and supposed to be there for a TV series shot on film and presented in HD, but the strong edge enhancement that was often applied to the transfer. It gives the film based images a harsh and unnecessary video look with haloes. Bad call. Lay it off for the next seasons, please. No digital sharpening!
